The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

The UN Habitat has published a job vacancy announcement on 28 February 2024 for qualified Kenya’s to fill in the vacant post of Urban Lab communication specialist to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2024

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assessing the current state of communication: Assessment of the current communicating material of Urban Lab to define strengths and weaknesses of materials.
  • Development of communication strategy: Definition of clear goals and targets, the definition of target audience and the type of content to be produced for the specific type of audience, development of the communication plan considering the key events.
  • Content creation and support: Writing and editing various types of content, including thematic stories, press releases, speeches, and social media posts, in keeping with organisational standards.
  • Social media management: ensuring the Lab’s social media presence that implies creating social media Urban Lab profiles (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, etc.), adapting and posting related content.

Qualification & Experience:

  • First Level university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field is required.
  • Experience of at least 2 years in developing comprehensive communication strategies and an in-depth understanding of target audiences, highly effective writing style, and expertise in high-impact messaging to global audiences is required.
  • Excellent working knowledge of digital media, including social media platforms and processes, with experience in creating and sharing digital content is required
  • Experience working with urban planning topics is desirable
