The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

The UN Habitat has published a job vacancy announcement on 22 February 2024 for qualified Kenya’s to fill in the vacant post of Land Administration Expert to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2024

Responsibilities:

  • Efficient and effective land management systems;
  • Freedom from arbitrary or forced eviction and the protection of security of tenure for all;
  • The progressive achievement of universal access to housing meeting the requirements for an adequate standard of living;
  • Participatory urban regeneration and slum upgrading initiatives. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies for government and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programmed portfolio. It also ensures that the cross-cutting areas of safety and the social inclusion issues of human rights; gender; children, youth, and older persons; and disability are developed and mainstreamed across the Agency.

Qualification & Experience:

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields: Geomatics, Land Administration, Land Management, or a field directly related to the assignment is required.
  • 5 years of working experience in addressing land sector issues in developing countries, particularly in regard to land administration and information, is required.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in Land Information Systems, digital mapping, and participatory enumeration methods is desirable
  • Knowledge on land-related tools development, capacity development, project management, partnership building and knowledge management
  • Ability to write technical documentation is desirable
