The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2023

Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Programme Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Contributes to the implementation of the Section workplan and activities in the field of economy and finance.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
  • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. Develops high quality concept notes and guidance materials in consultation with clients;

Qualification:

  • Advanced university degree in economics, spatial economics, economic development, finance, public policy or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, finance, and demonstrated experience in working with governments and in developing countries is required.
  • Previous working experience in the areas of urban economic development and municipal finance is desirable.
  • Experience in programme management and within the UN system is desirable.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English language is required and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
