FAO South Sudan looking for “Programme Support Specialist”.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and food security. Its Latin motto, fiat panis, translates to “let there be bread”. It was founded in October 1945.

The FAO has published a job vacancy announcement on 24th January 2024 for qualified South Sudanese to fill in the vacant post of Programme Support Specialist to be based in Juba, South Sudan.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to the Emergency and Resilience Team with coordinating work, setting country and operational objectives, and monitoring progress through regular meetings and the development, updating, and dissemination of action plans; implement corrective measures as a result of monitoring results within a timely period.
  • In collaboration with the FAO food security cluster/sector, assist the Head of Emergency and Resilience with response and resilience activities in the country, including preparedness, needs assessment, response, programming, implementation, and resource mobilization.
  • Support the Head of Emergency and Resilience in promoting FAO’s response to government parties, UN agencies, regional organizations, NGOs, and donors.
  • Review and analyze relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues; propose corrective measures; coordinate with relevant parties; identify and track follow-up actions.
  • Conduct outreach activities; conduct training workshops, seminars, etc.; make presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Assess NGOs for partnership within the ELRP and targeted by the various projects in conjunction with the LOA Team and the Information Management Team.
  • Support the development and approval of Letters of Agreement under the ELRP by providing guidance and support.
  • Participate relevant meetings and networking events to monitor and report on the partner’s activities.
  • Provide assistance in coordinating budgeting and funding activities for the Emergency and Resilience Unit (Programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work Programme, budget, etc.).
  • Assist in setting up emergency assessment and response teams immediately to address new emergencies and provide surge capacity to country offices.
  • Provide sectoral coordination support through the FAO-WFP-led Food Security Cluster/Sector in the country.
  • Ensure the Head of Emergency and Resilience keeps in touch with donors and provides them with updated information about FAO assessments, response plans, and activities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  • A university degree in Social Sciences, Agricultural Science, Development Studies, International Affairs, Management or related degree.
  • Working knowledge of English (level C) and limited knowledge (level B) of a second FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in developing operation, advocacy and outreach plans, project implementation.

  • An advanced degree is an added advantage.

  • Ability to organize and implement emergency response direct project activities (workshops, missions, assessments, etc.), work in hardship context and guide implementing partners and beneficiaries’ organizations.
  • Capacity to carry out assignments independently with minimal technical guidance;
  • Knowledge of the UN system, procedures and operational activities is an advantage.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
