The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.
The UN Habitat has published a job vacancy announcement on 15 May 2023 for qualified Kenya’s to fill in the vacant post of City Planning Extensions and Design Officer to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
UN Habitat Job Vacancy 2023
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the overall technical and supervisory guidance of the Coordinator of the UN-Habitat’s Planning Finance and Economy Section and in close coordination with UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa, the consultant will:
- Compile and analyse GIS data and other relevant information in corroboration with Garissa County and develop baseline data folder
- Develop draft development plan of the area for Garissa County under humanitarian and development regeneration programme
- Develop cadastral maps for refugee settlements in Kenya
- Technical advice as a civil engineer on various water and environment related issue in Kenya
- Develop various BOQs for construction programme under UN-Habitat
Qualification:
- A minimum Recognized Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture is a requirement.
Experience:
- At least 3 years experience in civil engineering is a requirement
- Experience in development projects and previous collaboration with United Nations desirable
Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
