The United Nations Mission in South Sudan is a United Nations peacekeeping mission for the recently independent South Sudan, which became independent on 9 July 2011. UNMISS was established on 8 July 2011 by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1996.
The UNMISS has published a job vacancy announcement on 17th May 2024 for qualified South Sudanese to fill in the vacant post of Fire Safety Assistant to be based in Malakal, South Sudan.
Duties and Responsibilities
These positions are in the Aviation Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and based in Malakal. The incumbents report directly to the Officer-in-Charge of Malakal Air Operations. Within delegated authority, the Fire Safety Assistants will be responsible for the following duties:
- a) Installation, inspection, and maintenance of UNMISS fire-fighting equipment and materials in the airfield.
- b) Ensuring integrity of all fire-fighting equipment and materials at the airfield.
- c) Extinguishing and suppressing all fires that may break out at or in the vicinity of the airfield by using UNMISS firefighting equipment.
- d) Responding to all aircraft emergencies.
- e) Driving and operate emergency vehicles safely and efficiently, responding to calls promptly; maintain the firefighting vehicles, ensuring they are in optimal condition.
- f) Assisting in conduction of the fire investigation to establish causes of fire and make appropriate preventive recommendations for future use.
- g) Carrying out surveys at airfields/helipads as per recommendation of UNMISS Aviation Fire Marshal.
- h) Keeping records of all fire-fighting equipment and materials at the airfield and advise UNMISS Aviation Fire Marshal on improvement, replenishment and replacement of fire-fighting equipment, materials and chemicals whenever required.
- i) Carrying out any other duties as directed by Air Operations Officer of The Air Region.
- j) Driving and operate fire fighting vehicles to maintain local standby for all aircraft operations including engine start up, re-fueling/de-fueling, landings and departures, Ground engine runs.
- k) Driving Fire fighting vehicles to pre-determined positions and maintain active stand by for VIP movements, and during adverse weather conditions.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications/ Special skills:
- High school diploma or certificate is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks, general knowledge of procedures and regulations for fire-fighting operations, experience in the operations of fire-fighting equipment and VHF radio communication is required.
Languages:
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
