IGCP Zambia looking for “Associate Sign Language Interpreters”.

IGCP was formed in 1991 to address the long-term conservation of the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) and its regional afromontane forest habitat in the Virunga Bwindi Landscape. Our aim has been to work together as a single gorilla conservation program in order to expand and consolidate the successes of the Mountain Gorilla Project and other initiatives at a regional level.

The IGCP has published a job vacancy announcement on 25th April, 2024 for qualified Zambians to fill in the vacant post of Associate Sign Language Interpreters to be based in Lusaka, Zambia.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Translating spoken language into sign language and vice versa accurately conveys not just words but also tone and context.
  • Collaborating with clients, other interpreters, and service providers to ensure effective communication.
  • Being prepared to work in various settings, such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal proceedings, or business meetings.
  • Prepare/ or familiarize oneself with the subject matter or context of the communication to ensure accurate interpretation.
  • Advocating for the accessibility and rights of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

Minimum Requirement:

  • Degree/ Diploma/ Certificate in Special Education or Zambian Sign Language.

  • Maintaining focus and concentration for extended periods, as interpreting can be mentally demanding.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest sign language trends and advancements in the field of sign language.
  • Understanding and respecting the cultural norms of the deaf community.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
