IGCP South Africa looking for “Secondary Level Associate Teacher”.

IGCP was formed in 1991 to address the long-term conservation of the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) and its regional Afromontane Forest habitat in the Virunga Bwindi Landscape. Our aim has been to work together as a single gorilla conservation program in order to expand and consolidate the successes of the Mountain Gorilla Project and other initiatives at a regional level.

The IGCP has published a job vacancy announcement on 16th May 2024 for qualified South Africa’s to fill in the vacant post of Secondary Level Associate Teacher to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Classroom support; collaborate with the lead teacher to prepare and organize classroom materials and resources for daily lessons and activities.
  • Student attendance; provide one-on-one or small group support to students who need extra help with their studies or specific tasks.
  • Classroom management; assist in maintaining discipline and order in the classroom, fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Instructional support; aid in delivering lessons and instructional content under the lead teacher’s guidance reinforcing key concepts and learning objectives.
  • Grading and assessment; assist in grading assignments, quizzes and tests, providing feedback to students and updating records as needed.
  • Supervision; monitor students during recess, lunchtime and other non-classroom activities to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Individual Educational Plans (IEPs); collaborate with the lead teacher to support students with learning differences or disabilities as outlined in their IEPs.
  • Extracurricular Activities; contribute to the planning and execution extracurricular programs, field trips and school events.
  • Professional Development; engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay informed about educational best practices.
  • Any other duties as may be determined necessary

Eligibility Criteria

  • Education; a minimum of a high school diploma or college degree or studying an education-related program is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience; prior experience working with children such as through volunteering, internships or part-time roles is advantageous.
  • Passion for Education; demonstrated enthusiasm for working with students and contributing to their educational growth and well-being.
  • Communication skills; effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students, colleagues and parents in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Patience and Empathy; ability to empathize with student’s challenges and exhibit patience while supporting their learning journey.
  • Organizational Abilities; strong organizational skills with classroom setup, manage materials and maintain records efficiently.
  • Flexibility; adaptability to work in a dynamic school environment and assist in various tasks as needed.
  • Collaborative Spirit; willingness to work as part of the team, taking direction from the lead teacher and contributing to a collaborative atmosphere.
