The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya. It is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the Habitat Agenda, adopted by the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996.

The UN Habitat has published a job vacancy announcement on 15 February 2024 for qualified Kenya’s to fill in the vacant post of Energy and Sustainability Intern to be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate housing for all. It works towards the long-term goal of ensuring sustainable cities and communities as mandated by the Sustainable Development Goals framework (SDG 11). As such, there are targets and indicators developed to this effect as short term guidance to enable monitoring of progress towards the attainment of SDG11, while linking and contributing to other SDG goals such as Affordable and clean energy Poverty Eradication SDG 7 with custodian mandate for access to basic services (SDG indicator 1.4.1) and land tenure security (SDG indicator 1.4.2) among others. Lack of access to adequate, affordable, reliable, safe and environmentally sound energy is a severe constraint on sustainable development. Currently, 780 million people lack access to modern energy (electricity) to meet their basic needs.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent in the past two years.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Office Suite). Demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
