Founded in 1933 as the International Relief Association, at the request of Albert Einstein, and changing its name in 1942 after amalgamating with the similar Emergency Rescue Committee, the IRC provides emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster.

The IRC has published a job vacancy announcement on 19th December, 2023 for qualified Ethiopians to fill in the vacant post of Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion officer to be based in Melkadida, Ethiopia.

Major Key Responsibilities:

Coordinate with the relevant government partners and communities to identify Sanitation and Hygiene needs of communities.
With support from EH Manager, design, and undertake/take part in quantitative/qualitative assessments to identify key risky hygiene behaviors, to set baseline and measure project achievements.
Work with beneficiaries’ representatives to identify volunteers/incentive workers for hygiene promotion/education.
Work with clients to select site and design to build latrines, water points and other WASH facilities for vulnerable groups, and ensure needs of most vulnerable are taken into account at all stages of hygiene promotion intervention/s.
Ensure that Sanitation and hygiene promotion are implemented in a timely and professional manner, according to design specifications and performance indicators and in line with donor requirements and beneficiary needs.
Ensure accurate documentation of Sanitation and Hygiene promotion activities and experiences at field and office level.
Maintain close contact with Environmental Health Manager within the IRC field sites to ensure effective technical, logistical and management support for all aspects of project implementation.
Conduct regular monitoring and technical support visits to project sites.
Conduct needs assessments, project review assessments.
Coordinate with HEALTH sector to conduct Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) assessments in health facilities, with Hygiene
Promotion Specialist, Senior MEAL Officer and other technical unit members to ensure targeted support and effective, quality programming.
Work with Senior Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Manager on development, testing, printing, and positioning of culturally appropriate IEC materials, and monitoring tools and ensure proper use of the same.
Prepare detailed work plan for hygiene promotion/education activities and ensure proper implementation of the same.
Maintain a regular system of project progress monitoring and evaluation.
Strive to increase program quality during project f implementation. Develop/maintain systems to measure impact and quality in assigned projects.
Recruit, train, manage and supervise Environmental Health Agents and community health volunteers basics of participatory hygiene promotion/education, methods/approaches, and communication and facilitation skills on.

Minimum Requirements:

Educational Requirements:

BA Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Nursing, Community Development, Health Education, or any other related field from recognized university.

Preferred experience & skills:

At least 2 years of relevant experience for degree holders and 1 year of relevant experience for Post graduate holder – Essential in the sector.
Relevant work experience on hygiene promotion with I/NGO in development, emergency, or refugee settings – Preferable
Very good written and spoken English
Previous experience of implementing participatory hygiene promotion and sanitation methods (e.g., PHAST, CLTS/H, CHC, CHAST) and organizing campaigns on key hygiene themes
Previous experience of implementing institutional (schools & health facilities) hygiene promotions/educations; – Preferable
