UNDSS reports directly to the Secretary-General. UNDSS manages a network of security advisers, analysts, officers and coordinators in more than 100 countries in support of around 180,000 United Nations personnel, 400,000 dependents and 4,500 United Nations premises worldwide.

The UNDSS has published a job vacancy announcement on April 21, 2024 for qualified Kenya’s to fill in the vacant post of Associate Field Security Coordination Officer to be based in KAKUMA, Kenya.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Field Security Coordination Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Prepares a draft security plan and security management documents for assigned elements of the mission, designated county or geographic area, including assigned aspects related to elaboration, development, implementation and updating of the documents.
  • Monitors activities related to the implementation of the approved security measures.
  • Participates in maintaining and enhancing lines of communication with United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) entities, including agencies funds and programmes and security focal points.
  • Assists with implementation and evaluation of the preparedness and compliance of the security measures as decided by the United Nations Security Management Team.
  • Conducts security surveys and assessments.
  • Supports the implementation of safety and security policies of the UNSMS.

Qualification:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in security management, business administration, political/social science, psychology, criminal justice, law, international relations, or a related field is required. A first level university degree with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first level university degree may be substituted with a diploma from a police or military education institution, college or academy obtained over a minimum of a three-year period.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in security, risk or disaster or emergency management in the public or private service areas, such as national security, military or police, or in corporate environment, or the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P), is required. At least one year of international experience in security operations is desirable.    Experience in using applied analytics, business intelligence, information management to advance decisions, strategies and execution is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations Official language is desirable. Note: Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (speak, read, write and understand). Knowledge of equals a rating of “confident” or “fluent” in at least two of the four areas.
